click to return to Greg's Store The historic mining town of Wallace was founded by Colonel William R. Wallace in 1884. It soon became the center of a vibrant silver mining economy. The town grew to a population of 4000 and soon became known as the Silver Capital of the World. This in spite of the violent "mining wars", 1892 - 1899. The huge amount of wealth accumulated in Wallace in the first half of the Twentieth Century lead to properity, poker and prostitution. The last Madam closed the last bordello in 1989 for lack of interest. The Oasis is now one of three museums in town.
