Depot Day 2002 in Historic Wallace Idaho

Jump to Link Table

May 11th is the date, downtown Wallace is the place, and the 17th annual Northern Pacific Depot Railroad Museum Festival and Classic Car Show is the event. Depot Day has evolved into a major event in Wallace, celebrating the coming of spring, America's favorite mode of transportation, the automobile, and the nostalgia of the railroad that helped make Wallace "The Silver Capital of the World."
Beautifully restored classic cars will fill the "closed-to-traffic" streets in historic Wallace, where there will also be live music, lots of activities for kids on the Depot lawn, and various ethnic and traditional food booths. There will also be a model train exhibit at the Arts Center, "Legends of the Old West" shootouts and melodrama on the streets, and the opportunity to send a telegram in Morse code from the Depot's telegraph office across town. Since the Depot was built in 1902, using special bricks brought from China as ballast originally destined for a huge hotel in Tacoma, this year's centennial celebration will be especially noteworthy.

There will be drawings for several prizes, with the Grand Prize being 100 ounces of 0.999 pure Idaho silver beautifully framed to create an outstanding display. Registration for cars in various categories will be between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM, and trophies will be awarded at 4:00 PM.

Spokane man wins $5000 in Chamber's Reverse Drawing AGAIN IN 2002!
Fourth Annual Wallace Chamber of Commerce
Dinner and "Reverse Drawing for $5,000"
on the eve of Depot Day!
Up to 280 dinner/donation tickets will be sold for $50 apiece; 20 tickets will be auctioned during the Santa Maria Style Barbecue. The last ticket drawn wins $5000. Someone representing that ticket must be present to win; if you live far away, the Chamber will find someone to eat your dinner and represent your ticket for you.
After two hours of raucous enthusiasm over the drawing of 250 losing tickets (some bought from the Chamber at frantic auctions and some bought from the last ten people on the stage), the sole surviver and Winner of $5000 was
Darrell Freedle of Silverton.

Depot Day 1994
The Northern Pacific Depot was moved 200 feet to this location in 1986 when Interstate 90 was built over the town, rather than through it. There was no option for the feds because every building in town is on the National Historic Register.

Wallace festivals are already known for folk music at the gazebo. Some of us are working to make folk music a regular summer feature.
